Is “Speed Dating” More Engaging than Serial Presentations?

Weinberg and Moussawi collaborated with the other faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course to explore how students could give and receive higher quality peer feedback on team presentations. They compared two different presentation approaches. Next, teams changed pairings, and the process repeated. Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher. According to the surveys, students reported giving and receiving more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions compared to sessions with serial, class-wide presentations. Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions. Classroom observations corroborated student perceptions, documenting a greater percentage of students participating actively during the speed-dating sessions compared to the traditional approach. Given these positive results, Weinberg, Moussawi, and colleagues are using speed dating for team presentations and feedback sessions more frequently in this Information Systems course.

Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too. The best part?

Guest blog by Mrs. Across the country and throughout our great state, classrooms are transforming in an effort to engage students in meaningful learning. Teachers are revamping their teaching styles and lessons to reach students in a way that is fun and memorable. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting.

I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state. So how could I bring learning to life and get students to learn without even realizing it? In this blog, I will share out my speed dating activity and how I used in my 11th grade social studies classroom. Speed Dating The great thing about this activity is that it allows your students to explore a large amount of content in a 45 or minute class period and can be used in any subject area.

Students work individually, in pairs, and then collaboratively. Initially, I thought I was a genius but after researching, I realized it was not some new, unheard of idea. I introduced this activity in my Progressive Era unit. To better understand how it works, here is my breakdown for the period. This is explained with 24 students, and 12 different people being showcased. This leads to a discussion by groups and then as a whole class to introduce the lesson.

I arrived on the singles scene in with an aching heart and a lot to learn. Seemingly overnight, dating apps had shifted from the desperate domain of the overs to the new normal. Every man and his dog were on Tinder — or every man and his sedated tiger, all dumb grins and flexed muscles bulging out of Bintang singlets. Initially hesitant, I got into the swing of it soon enough; window-shopping for boys from the comfort of your couch sure has its benefits, and amongst the beefed-up bodybuilders and BDSM buffs, there seemed to be a few potential suitors.

After all, I have a clean record, wide smile and impeccable hygiene.

In this introductory course for psychology undergraduates, students receive constructive feedback on their writing delivered in a format that simulates the peer.

Our first meeting was yesterday we officially meet on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1st and 2nd periods. Students came in and sat in groups of 3 and 4. Each group received a question printed on neon colored paper to contemplate and respond to quietly on a lined Post-It note. Questions included:. I gave students about five minutes to write down their ideas on their lined sticky notes; below is a PDF of the compiled student responses.

I am missing about as a few students forgot to give me their sticky notes as we left, but the collection below will give you an idea of what they were thinking. We then got up, put all our bookbags in the corner, and re-arranged the room by moving the tables into one long row thank goodness for the wheels that finally arrived in November and to our custodial staff for putting them on the tables.

The kids loved that we could fit the different sized Artcobell tables together like a puzzle to form one long table. I then explained that we were going to do a speed dating method of conversation , a strategy I learned many years ago from one of my favorite professors at the University of Georgia, Dr. Bob Fecho. I told students we would be sharing our responses to the discussion questions by interviewing each other using the speed dating technique.

After reviewing the procedures and then modeling a conversation with one of the students, we jumped in and began our lightning round discussions! When we finished, I then told students I wanted them to think about everything they had heard during the speed dating conversations; I asked them to think of one idea or reflection from a fellow students that stood out to them that they felt was share-worthy.

After a lifetime of not really dating, my brother signed up for a speed dating event. Lo and behold, he left with requests for a follow-up date from every person that he speed dated that evening, and he ended up marrying one of them less than a year later. So, I guess you could say that I am a believer in the potential of speed dating! Andrea teaches Spanish at St.

An old, firework-obsessed man, a half-demon half-angel, and a boy missing his middle finger walk into a bar…. In the summer before my junior year in high school, I attended a program at Berkeley called Emerging Writers Institute, a two-week creative writing camp. My favorite memory there is of an exercise called Character Speed Dating. First, we would each take out a piece of paper and for a few minutes focus on writing character profiles.

Then, we would improvise and rotate around the room interacting with each other— as our characters. The character I assigned myself was an eight-year-old boy with feral or supernatural qualities. He could climb trees weightlessly, eat raw meat, and feel no pain. With this Speed Dating exercise, I got the sense of how my character would interact with someone different, like an old pyrotechnics-obsessed man. Or we might find comic awkwardness as the old man moves at a different pace as the flighty, reckless boy.

I also got the sense of how my character would interact with an accidental kindred spirit.

The purpose of speed dating is for students to quickly and effectively share their knowledge or give feedback to a partner. Speed Dating can take two forms for students — to provide peer feedback or to share expert knowledge about a topic. In one form, Speed Dating can be used as a peer review or peer feedback session. That way, students receive targeted feedback while also reading and reviewing several peers’ writing.

Speed dating can also be used by students to share expert knowledge about a topic with several peers. In this form, each student becomes an expert on a particular task or skill.

ABOUT SPEED DATING. How does it work? 11 writers will arrive at , and we have three coaches coming who will coach the writers on their presentations.

As an elementary school librarian K-4 , this was the perfect event for me to get started at BEA. And it was very much like a short first date with each author, complete with some awkward pauses and some great conversations cut short by that cursed buzzer. I loved it. Nineteen authors were given three and a half minutes to pitch their upcoming books and themselves to a roundtable of excited book lovers.

When the buzzer sounded the authors moved on to the next table, leaving each group with a taste of their process, their new work, and their personalities. They were all just so lovely. No one sits still for photos while speed dating, so I apologize to the authors in advance for any mortifying poses I captured. Plus I was inspired to connect with some of the authors further, through their Twitter accounts and maybe even a visit to my school budget willing.

As exhausting as those second bursts could be, this was by far my favorite part of the Expo. And beware, she has a dangerous obsession with cardigans. You can find her on Twitter jackiereeve. Wow, such incredible technology! Next up: delivery via drone.
